The Edited Truth

Does photoshopping ruin self image?

Having a role model for young kids has always been an important thing. Children like to have someone to look up to and be inspired by. Yet that is not always the case for some. In today’s modern age, image has become a majorly important thing to society. People go as far as to edit
their photos just to fit the social standard, which is not healthy for these kids to see. It creates an unhealthy mindset at a young age.

Being confident is the key to loving oneself and loving what is seen in the mirror. Editing tiny details to look a certain way does not help that encouragement and confidence. Minor changes such as creating a flatter stomach, filling in hip dips, slimming down the legs, and more create a false sense of reality for someone else. People will go through great measures just to achieve a look that was created by an editing software, such as Photoshop.

Commonly, people such as Kim Kardashian, Tana Mongeau, and Kylie Jenner are known to edit their Instagram photos before posting them. It creates an appeal to people to gather more likes and shares. What is never taken into consideration is who sees those posts and turns to constantly degrading themselves for not being perfect. As time passes, it becomes more evident that people are becoming less confident in themselves for not looking a certain way when they do not have to.

Nothing is wrong with having a few flaws. Not everyone is like porcelain glass. Being different is what makes someone remarkable and stand out. No one must look like those Instagram models who fake their photos half the time to be “perfect.” Children should look up to those who are unique, people who will encourage them to be the person of themselves that they can be.
