The End of the Nine Weeks

Wrapping up the semester

In three weeks, Deerfield Beach High’s nine weeks of the second quarter will end, and with it comes the end of the 1st semester. Despite the winter break ending on January 9th, the end of the first semester isn’t until Friday, January 13th. Until then, students have midterm exams and grades to keep them occupied.

Unlike the end of the first quarter, first semester grades require more vital attention. This includes 1st quarter grades, 2nd quarter grades, and the midterm exam grade. In order to fully pass a semester, a student must have grades higher than an F in both quarters or have a grade higher than an F for one quarter and pass the midterm exam.

Without passing a semester, students might have to retake a course. Grades can be checked on Pinnacle which holds the most recent and updated information. Final grades seen on Pinnacle will be the grades on students report card coming out on April 14th.

PSAT scores for underclassmen have also been released recently on College Board. Students can make an account or log in with this link. Colleges and universities take their time to look for high scores and some English teachers have taken the initiative to work through these statistics.

“Kids don’t realize that they look at these scores because if you get a well over 900 score, it means you have a better chance of passing the SAT with a score of more than 1210. It’s pertinent I help them with these lessons and videos I do as SAT practice so even if they don’t realize the importance of studying, they’ll have it ingrained in their head.” says CBA English 2 and Magnet Coordinator, Tamara Wilson.

Upcoming events to wrap-up the end of these nine weeks are winter spirit week, exam week, and winter break starting on December 26th.

There isn’t much to be concerned about for DBHS students other than the Butler Scholarship accepting applicants until April 17th and magnet applications for incoming freshmen or students who are interested in joining Communication and Broadcast Arts (CBA), International Baccalaureate (IB), or Urban Teaching Academy Program (UTAP).

The due dates for all open assignments will officially close on January 13th after winter break. Students have well over 2 weeks to work on their grades before the beginning of the 2nd semester.
