The Gateway to Adulthood

Get Started on Creating a Resume

An important but often understated part of entering college or the workforce is creating a resume. As many students approach the beginning of their careers, it is necessary to begin crafting a resume early for multiple functions.

A resume is a document personalized to display one’s background, skills, and accomplishments. Nearly all employers require one for an individual to be considered for hire. Additionally, resumes can be required for college scholarships or for teachers to write letters of recommendation.

It can seem overwhelming to attempt to create a resume. However, Naviance makes it easy to formulate one. It provides step-by-step instructions as well as a variety of templates to use. There is even an option to create a resume through Canva, a graphic design site, for those who would like to pursue a more imaginative route.

Some sections that should be incorporated in every resume include a summary of its objective, work experience, educational background, extracurricular activities, achievements, skills, and references. Each of these topics will give employers and others receiving the resume insight on an individual and what they are capable of. Prospective employers prefer to learn about the background of their potential employees before hiring them.

Students can put their flare on their resumes depending on the route they are attempting to follow. Those looking to be employed in a creative field, such as the arts, will find their employers prefer a more unique and stylized document. However, individuals applying for STEM-related jobs may find that employers desire a more traditional resume. These can still be customizable, using different layouts, fonts, and subtle hints of color.

As previously mentioned, Naviance guides students through creating a resume. It includes a complete outline with each section and allows students to add their information effortlessly. Additionally, resumes done through Naviance are available for students to export and for teachers to view.

Ms. Cruz in the BRACE office is offering complimentary Swag Bags to each student that shows her their resume until March 7th. The job fair on March 11th is an opportunity to come prepared with a resume to present to possible employers.

Applying to college and work can be difficult, but resumes aid in the process and are necessary resources for those viewing them. They impress employers and display a candidate’s qualities. Ms. Cruz’s BRACE Place Canvas course includes additional information about resumes that students may require.
