Childhood Myths: Beliefs and Wonders
As children, many kids embraced well-known figures like Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, or the Easter Bunny. Others were captivated by specific rumors, such as the belief that cracking one’s knuckles could lead to arthritis. Regardless of these individual beliefs, these childhood myths significantly shaped children’s experiences worldwide.
“As a kid, my mom made it clear that if I ever walked around with one shoe on, I would be in serious trouble. Everyone accepted it, and to this day, I steer clear of that,” proclaims DBHS freshman Mitchneiby Saintus.
Various myths and stories have shaped childhood, and some continue to hold purpose. Santa Claus remains the most iconic, with millions of children eagerly embracing the Christmas Spirit each year, striving to be on their best behavior in exchange for gifts. Greek mythology also holds a place in the cultural landscape; while not many take it literally, a substantial number enjoy delving into the tales of the Greek gods.
“I distinctly remember waking up from a nightmare. As I regained consciousness, the chairs around me appeared to have scary faces. It was so unsettling that I immediately forced myself back to sleep.”
However, some people didn’t believe in these childhood classics. Some believe that parents tell their children these stories to encourage good behavior in their lives or just for entertainment. Skeptics believe that these stories, although harmlessly made, created unnecessary deception that led to disappointment and mistrust in the long run.
“Some widely accepted beliefs in society pale in contrast to most myths you’ve heard as a child. It shows how humans have an insatiable desire to entertain each other, no matter the cost.”
Whether people believe in childhood myths (and still do) or see them as made-up stories, they have made an impression on humanity as it is today. They’ve changed how the world is perceived and taught lessons. Although the stories may disappear over time, the memories and feelings will linger.
