Should the Minimum Wage be Raised?
Most people are aware of the current minimum wage. While some believe it is fair and sufficient for living expenses, others argue that it is unfair and too low.
The minimum wage protects workers from being underpaid by establishing a baseline salary. This starts a discussion, as it affects a wide range of individuals— from teenagers to adults—who are employed. Many of these workers feel that the current minimum wage is inadequate to meet their financial needs. They may feel they are not making ends meet by working according to the minimum wage.
“I feel the minimum wage should be raised. You never know just how much it can help the people working and the economy,” said Deerfield Beach High School senior Vanessa Henriquez. ” I do have a job as of now, and as I said, I feel like a raise in the minimum wage would be a big help since I am a senior trying to prepare for the future.”
As the years progress, the minimum wage experiences a steady increase as inflation affects our society. As of 2024, the minimum wage lies at $12/hour and will gradually increase until it hits $15/hour by September 2026. Many people support the gradual increase in wages. They believe raising wages too quickly might cause inflation and create social problems. A slow rise can help maintain economic stability while supporting workers in a changing economy.
“I feel like me since I do not currently have a job, I do not think about the minimum wage as much as those who do, but I feel like regardless if I was in their place I would want to raise it. Just because I think it can benefit them a lot more, with things like saving up,” said DBHS sophomore Stephanie Bautista.
Whether in favor of raising the minimum wage or not, it is good to keep in mind that some people live off the minimum wage rate and may need the money to support themselves or even their families.
