The Road to Superior

One band, one sound

On October 29, 2022, Deerfield Beach High School’s very own Marching Bucks achieved an overall rating of superior at the 2022 Marching Band Music Performance Assessment. The last time this has been attained was in 2018.

The Marching Band Music Performance Assessment is an annual assessment for high schools in which marching bands from across the state of Florida are judged on a specified criterion. Superior is the highest possible rating given to bands exhibiting qualities of distinction.

There are six categories in which these bands are evaluated; Visual Performance, General Effect, Music 1, Music 2, Auxiliary, and Percussion. The Marching Bucks received a perfect rating in four of these categories, bringing the overall rating of superior home.

This achievement was made possible by hard work and dedication put in by band students and staff. Band President Edgar Mata describes the journey as one of the most difficult but rewarding experiences ever.

“It took long hours of difficult practice and constant repetition to ensure every detail was perfect, but it ended up paying off in the end,” Edgar says.

For instrumentalists, practices were divided upon the musical aspect of the field show as well as the visual features. Marching Band Director, Mr. Brandy Collot, directed music rehearsals, while Assistant Director Mr. Anthony “Amp” Hill  was in charge of drill rehearsals. Altogether, the performance looked aesthetically pleasing with both sight and auditory senses working in harmony.

Drum Major Tatiana Williams, describes the band as one big family constantly working together towards spectacular performances. She says, “Working together and motivating each other was very important in getting the superior.”

The Marching Bucks are certainly one big family that never fails to impress. “This is just the beginning, the work doesn’t stop here”, says Elite Beauty Auxiliary Captain Janiyah Clark. If students want to become a part of the superior-rated Marching Bucks, stop by room 313 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This team will never stop growing and welcomes everyone who is willing to share their talents any day and any moment.
