The Grammy’s annual show
Every year, the Recording Academy presents the Grammy Awards, an award show commemorating the appreciation of the most outstanding impacts from the music industry of the previous year.
The award show began in 1959, when recording executives of the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, California, wanted to create an award like the Oscar and Emmy awards but instead with the music industry. The award was named Grammy as an abbreviation for the invention of the gramophone, also known as a record player. Essentially, the award is a gold-plated gilded gramophone on a black-colored supporting block. Each award is then engraved with the winner’s name and given after the award announcement
Since 2012, there are 78 categories ranging from different music genres and can all be separated by groups of soloists, duos, bands, etc. Some categories consist of Best R&B Album, Best Rap Performance, and Best Pop Duo/Group. Although, the most anticipated categories are Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best New Artist, and Song of the Year.
This year, the 65th annual Grammy Awards will be hosted by Trevor Noah on February 5th in the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Big-name artists like Harry Styles, Lizzo, Adele, and Beyonce are all nominated for multiple categories. They are battling head-to-head for their albums, “Harry’s House”, “Special”, “30”, and “Renaissance”.
Zollet Nguyen, a freshman at DBHS, says that her favorite K-pop group is Blackpink, and they did not qualify for the Grammys. However, she would like to at least see BTS win a Grammy this year as they’ve had a close chance numerous times before. The group was nominated this year for three categories, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Album of the Year, and Best Music Video.
In previous years, the Recording Academy hasn’t completely been immune to the downsides of social media critics. They continue to receive thousands of criticisms from the media due to the accusations of them snubbing artists. For example, in 2020, Canadian artist, The Weeknd, had no Grammy nominations for his album, “After Hours”, which was named the 33rd best album of 2020 by Billboard. Fans were outraged, and so was The Weeknd. As a result, he decided to officially announce that his record label will no longer be submitting his work for Grammy consideration.
Regardless of all the backlash and criticism, the show has been running for more than 60 years with no plans of quitting. It remains one of the most anticipated award shows of the year with millions tuning in to watch.
