Times Up!

Are timed tests bad?

Timed tests are something that has been in schools for decades, whether that be a good or dreadful thing—SATs, ACTs, FAST testing, and so on. From elementary to high school, these tests are timed for many reasons. To those who are fast it can be mildly difficult or even easy to do these tests in a set time limit, however there are some who struggle and even fail these exams due to pressure from the ticking clock.

Kids should be able to leave after testing and be put in a waiting room, because you shouldn’t just keep all the kids in a room to become a distraction,” said Deerfield Beach High School freshman Athalie Buno. ” So, all the kids who need to finish can finish in peace and not worry about a time limit. Timed testing shouldn’t be a thing.”

Timed testing can be good and help prepare for working time frames. It can better help with time management. Both with and without time have their pros and cons. There is the advantage of improving one’s time management and being able to work under pressure, however there is the issue of not finishing on time.

“If someone needs more time, they should be able to finish while the party that is done can be sent back to class or held in a waiting room,” said DBHS senior Alexa Dean. ”Not everyone is on the same level. Some people read slower and need time to process these things, and when you can’t finish, you rush and now it’s inaccurate; and if that follows you to college, it doesn’t truly show who you are as a student.”

Things like timed testing have its gains and faults. The cons outweigh the pros for some people and vice versa. Timed testing can be beneficial, however it doesn’t always show a students full potential.  Everyone is different, something that can work for a group of people can hold another back from their potential.
