Fading Into Gray

A world without rainbows
Environments change as human activity affects them. New buildings and streets are built every day, while trees are being cut down. As a result, a feeling of difference has spread among people of all ages. Through social media, they have been posting about a certain topic: the loss of colors. Images of cars from the past compared with those today are common. But is it true?
Yeah, there has been an evident change in colors that everyone notices, but trending’s have influence in this a lot. This year, neutral colors have become a lot more common in modern buildings, clothes, and even cars. This keeps being compared to older things, which makes the present seem less colorful. However, this doesn’t mean the world is actually becoming gray, right?
“These days, colors seem darker to me,” said DBHS senior Fatima Segura. “I feel scared of what can happen because of how the environment feels. Honestly, everything has become boring and gray; I can barely see colors in the world, and it’s so different from before. I used to see brighter colors”.
Sometimes, age can also influence how people see this situation. Little kids have that innocent mindset, where everything seems beautiful or even funny, and they see the world with big eyes because colors seem brighter. Meanwhile, for teenagers, it’s a stage to mature and understand real-world problems more seriously. That’s when the feeling of a change of colors arrives. Does it influence that much? It does, because the brain and mindset develop continuously and somehow change the way humans observe, analyze, and feel every experience.
But because nobody is the same, it remains an open debate. It goes with grey, white, and beige arriving, the same shades, conveying the same calm, or ‘simplicity’. Is it that bad?
“I think the world has become grayer over time,” said DBHS sophomore Ligia Guevara. “If I think about it or see my surroundings, I end up with a weird feeling in my chest… but I’m getting used to these changes”.
Still, color has been the way people express themselves, and back in the day, these modern and ‘boring’ changes would have been considered elegant. So, if it’s a type of beauty, why is this change so judged?
In the end, bright colors are still there in the green trees, blue skies, and even the colorful advertisements. Maybe people need to stop for a moment and think about what has really changed: it is not the world itself, but the way humans choose to see it.
