The long journey home

The Odyssey has come

The plot of the movie The Odyssey is a legendary adventure that lasts over twenty years: ten years are spent fighting in the Trojan War abroad, and another ten years are spent on the dangerous journey back to the island of Ithaca. The story skillfully combines the separate struggles of a father and son as they fight against great odds to recover their family and kingdom.

“The Odyssey is a very interesting yet disturbing movie due to all the wars, the weird spells and transformations, the missions, and the biggest plot twist to happen at the end of the movie,” said DBHS 10th grader Diani Perez Morales.

During the time that Odysseus was away, his palace in Ithaca was taken over by arrogant suitors who assumed that he was dead. They continue to feast on his property, squander his wealth, and urge his loyal wife, Penelope, to select one of them as her husband. Motivated by the goddess Athena, Odysseus’ son Telemachus finally leaves his state of inactivity and goes to the mainland to get information and finds out that his father is still alive.

Odysseus is finally released from the island of the nymph Calypso. Following a violent storm caused by the angry sea god Poseidon, enraged because Odysseus had blinded his son Polyphemus, a one-eyed giant, the raft is destroyed, and Odysseus ends up washing ashore with the Phaeacians. There, he talks about the terrible and lengthy journey he has undergone. This journey has involved a series of mythical dangers: he had outwitted the one-eyed giant, resisted the witch Circe, who turned his men into animals, gone to the Underworld to obtain prophetic advice, tied himself to the mast to survive the deadly and hypnotic song of the Sirens, passed through the dangerous space between the six-headed monster Scylla and the whirlpool Charybdis, and in the end lost all of his crew after they ate the sacred cattle of the sun god Helios.

The Phaeacians secretly sail Odysseus back to Ithaca. Once he’s there, Athena turns him into a super sketchy-looking old beggar so he can spy on everyone and see who’s still actually on his team. He links up with his son and a couple of trusted workers, and they start plotting. Meanwhile, Penelope is completely over all the annoying suitors camping out in her house, so she pulls out a genius move and challenges them to a contest. She tells them whoever can string Odysseus’ impossible, giant hunting bow and shoot an arrow straight through a dozen lined-up axe heads gets to marry her. Every single one of those guys tries and totally bombs; they can’t even bend the bow. But then the random old beggar asks for a turn, picks it up like it’s nothing, and nails the shot on the first try before dropping his disguise. Right after that, he and Telemachus go completely feral on the suitors, wiping them out, taking back the throne, and finally letting Odysseus catch a break with his family.
